Description

Natal Brown Plastic Maracas Maracas originated from South America and are a hand held percussion instrument almost always used in pairs, they consist of a sphere filled with plastic beads and the sphere connects to a handle which is gripped by the hand. Often the spheres are tuned to different pitches – one high and one low and because of the distance the beads have to travel to hit the outside casing of the sphere the rhythm must be anticipated. Natal have been producing percussion instruments now for many years and the Brown maracas shown here use plastic spheres and handles. They are a lightweight percussion instrument often used in Calypso music but were on occasions played by Ringo Starr on some of the early Beatles recordings.
